On November 2, 2019, the Conference for China Maternal and Child Health Science and the Award Ceremony for the Third (2019) National Prize for Maternal and Child Health was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

With their excellent work in “The Study in the Etiologic Mechanism and Preventive strategies of Birth Defect Related Diseases”, the research team in reproductive medicine of AHMU was the recipient of the First Prize for the National Prize for Progress in Maternal and Child Health.  As the principal investigator of the team, Prof. Cao Yunxia was honored as the only recipient to make an award acceptance speech.

Responding to the great need of birth-defect prevention and control study, following the developmental strategy of national population and health, the AHMU research team in reproductive medicine has long been committed to the research on gamete, reproductive tract development abnormality, the mechanistic research of birth-defect related diseases and their clinical translation. The researchers have drawn upon the collective resources in multidiscipline including Reproductive Medicine, Gynecology, Genetics, Science for Maternal and Child Health Care, as well as Basic Medical Sciences. Their model of study following the chain of “risk factor recognition- etiologic mechanism- biomarker- risk warning- translational application” could strike out a new path for the reduction of birth defects.
The National Prize for Progress in Maternal and Child Health is known as one of the top-league awards in the field of maternal and child health care research and family planning study, thus the prize is recognized as a true acknowledgement of the service of the outstanding scholars.
