On November 22, 2023, the official results of the 2023 election for new academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were announced. Professor Xia Qiang, our distinguished alumnus and President of Renji Hospital affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has been elected as an academician of the CAE.
Xia Qiang, a male of Han nationality and a member of the Communist Party of China, was born in Anqing, Anhui Province, in September 1966. His ancestral home is in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Holding a graduate degree and a Ph.D. in Medicine, he is a professor, chief physician, and Ph.D. supervisor. In 1987, he graduated from Anhui Medical University with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine. From August 1987 to August 1993, he worked as a resident physician and then an attending physician at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University. In 1997, he obtained his Ph.D. in Medicine from Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University (formerly Shanghai Medical University). Currently, he serves as the president of Renji Hospital affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the director of Shanghai Organ Transplantation and Immune Engineering Technology Research Center, the director of Shanghai Organ Transplantation Institute, and the director of China-Southeast Asia Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease Translational Research Center.
“Anhui Medical University, my alma mater, nurtured my love and aspiration for medicine as I grew up there.” said Xia Qiang. He has always been concerned about the development of Anhui Medical University and was appointed as a guest professor of AHMU in 2004. During Anhui Medical University’s graduation ceremony in 2022, he sent a video message of wishes to the graduates, encouraging them to aspire to become outstanding physicians for the great nation.
